SOCIETY FACTS

Our Society’s history is filled with remarkable and unexpected moments—from duels to shipwrecks.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • One of our Past Presidents, William Bowie, died in a duel against Richard J. Uniacke in 1819 (after insulting remarks were made between the two lawyers in a court trial).

  • Several of our board members, including the President and Vice President, perished tragically in a ship wreck (SS City of Boston) in 1870.

  • Prime Minister W.L. MacKenzie King once attended a Society meeting whilst in town, and was therefore inducted as an Honourary Member.
