ABOUT US

The Scots est. 1768 A.D.

SOCIETY HISTORY

Founded as “The North British Society” on March 26th, 1768 A.D., the very first meeting was held on the corner of Granville and Salter Street at the home of founding member John Taylor.  The society was founded 19 years after Halifax was settled.  This followed the defeat in Scotland of the Jacobite rising at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.  English persecution of the Scottish Highlanders, coupled with economic hardship forced many Scots to leave Scotland and settle in Halifax.

The North British Society (or ‘Scots Club’) started in an effort to help fellow Scotsmen acclimate themselves to this ‘new world’, as well as the maintenance of a friendly feeling among the Scottish community, and those who visited Halifax for the purposes of trade.  As the Society (and its funds) grew, they helped members with medical expenses, burials, and various other issues they came against.  As the years went on, the society morphed and changed with the times, but always in support of Scottish people and culture in Halifax.
